An old modernist house in the Berkeley hills needed a new deck to replace an existing one that had deteriorated beyond repair over the years. Two twin prompts drove the development of this scheme for the client:

1. Not blocking the view of the San Francisco Bay from the house, which is set back on a patio about 10’ from where the deck would begin and

2. Creating a pathway from the deck down to the bottom of the hill.

The resulting design steps the deck down from the house patio to protect its view, but has the stair path wind up into the body of the deck creating a sublime overlook that also functions as a bench where one can sit and take in the view.
